Why GreenTech?

Giants Stadium was looking for a way to accomodate their professional major league soccer tenant, the NJ MetroStars, by providing a good natural grass surface. This natural grass surface would also be used for international soccer events which require a natural grass surface. Giants Stadium is also a venue for concerts, municipal events, NCAA football, NFL football, band concerts and other uses which put a tremendous strain on a natural grass surface. It was decided the only way to have natural grass in that venue was to have the ability to remove the field.

The ITM™ Solution.

The GreenTech ITM System was installed in 1997 on top of the artificial playing surface for the MLS soccer tenant and for international soccer events. It was a tremendous success. The field was removed for concerts and then reinstalled for play in a matter of hours if needed. The field was removed prior to football season and kept on a lot 1 mile from the stadium. Because the football players prefer to play on grass, the field was kept in the stadium during the football preseason for 2 years to judge its playability. That test was successful and it was decided to build another field and rotate turf during the football season to give the football teams a natural grass field.

After three years, it was determined that a natural grass surface cannot be maintained with the amount of use within the stadium; 2 NFL teams playing their home schedules in late fall when turf goes dormant and an event on average every other day. The financial commitment required for a large enough stock of replacement modules was too large compared to other alternatives for the stadium to accept. Giants Stadium still has an ITM field in storage and may use it in situations where natural turf is preferred.
