Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, Wales
Why GreenTech?
Millennium Stadium was designed as a multi-use facility with a natural grass pitch. The design is very accomodating to the spectator but not to the environment for the pitch. After much deliberation, it was clear the pitch must be removed to allow it to get proper maintenance, sunlight, and to allow for a hard floor surface to accomodate a wide variety of revenue generating events within the stadium.
The ITM™ Solution.
The ITM System was chosen at first for only the shaded sections of the pitch to be rotated with new modules maintained in a proper environment. When stadium construction was delayed, the fact the pitch could be built and grown elsewhere while stadium construction was underway became very important. The decision was made later to build one entire ITM pitch for the stadium. The ITM System was installed to accomodate a rugby match between Wales and South Africa, before the stadium was completed! The game was played, Wales was victorious, and the field was then removed to complete the stadium and prepare for the Rugby World Cup.The fact that there is but one pitch for that environment has led to some events being played on a substandard surface. The ITM System is designed so that worn areas of the pitch can be rotated and replaced with healthy spares. A ryegrass pitch simply cannot survive with low light and poor circulation. The stadium has been able to remove the pitch in the summer to accomodate other events, just as planned. During the playing season, the pitch is resodded many times. This is expensive and generally a sod is significantly weakened the moment it is brought into that environment. The best solution is to have more modules in stock to rotate healthy turf during the season and bring the used pitch to a maintenance site to be rejeuvenated. GreenTech is proud to be a part of such a wonderful facility and will work with the stadium to bring a solution to one of the most difficult natural turf situations in the world.
